Diving in Sea of Cortez

Cabo San Lucas is a unique diving destination because the Sea of Cortez is located between temperate waters and tropical waters. The Sea of Cortes is one of the world's unique ocean environments. It is considered to be the biologically richest body of water on earth, supporting over 800 marine vertebrates species. Diving in Cabo is famous for it's "sand falls". The sand falls are actually streams of sand that fall over the underwater canyons. They create sand rivers and this is extremely interesting to see. The nutrient rich waters make for a spectacular population of fish from small inshore fish to large schools of jack, tuna, dolphin, and "sportfish" such as dorado and marlin. There are migratory visits from whales and hammerhead sharks. A fortunate scuba diver may also encounter manta rays, and even whale sharks in the plentiful waters of the Sea of Cortez. It is critical to the success of your dive to plan your dive at the right time. The Sea of Cortez sees good weather conditions June through November. Prior to June, the Sea of Cortez waters temperature is quite cold. If you are not interested in diving you could also snorkel. There are diving and snorkeling tours available. Snorkeling would still allow you to see most of the inshore fish and some of the beautiful coral.

Whales pass several hundred meters off of Cabo San Lucas' shore every year. The best time to see whales are between January and March, when the gray whale migrates. There are several ways to whale watch in Cabo San Lucas. There are boat tours that offer whale watching. Boats of varying size carry the hundreds of whale watchers out to see these marine mammals as they visit our peninsula in their annual migration, every year. It is not uncommon at this time for a curious whale to come close to a boat. Although no trip can guarantee whales, the odds are definitely in your favor. The smaller the boat the better your chances are of getting close.

Have a drink at Cabo San Lucas' most famous club

The Cabo Wabo cantina is Cabo's most famous club, owned by Sammy Hagar. If you are in town at the same time as Sammy is, you might even get to watch one of his impromptu performances. If you are not that lucky, you can still enjoy the atmosphere the Cabo Wabo has to offer and live music on most nights. Hike through the desert

You must be especially careful when hiking in Cabo's desert lands. You will need twice as much water as you normally would. A trek through the desert is absolutely spectacular. Desert hiking is best in the winter, with the temperature being around 70. It is possible to hike the desert in the summer but, you must go in the early morning. It is dangerous to hike alone, and best to hire an experienced guide from the area, just incase you get lost. The desert offers incredible rock formations, unique vegetation and wildlife native only to this region. Hiking can be for all ages and hiking in Cabo's desert is something that you will remember. There are also other hiking and natural history tours which include fossil fields, challenging hikes into the Sierra de la Laguna and day trips to old mining ghost towns.

Bird Sanctuary

Close to downtown San Jose Del Cabo is the San Jose Estuary and Bird Sanctuary. In the sanctuary you can find about 200 species of exotic birds which include egrets, herons and brown pelicans. You can rent a kayak to experience this sanctuary. Sunrise and sunset are the most scenic times to visit; however, if you are an avid bird watcher and want to see species and identify them, you may want to visit during daylight hours. Visit Lover's beach.

Lover's Beach ( also known as Playa Del Amor) is another must, but to get to this beach you'll need some kind of boat or kayak as the beach is not accessible by land. It is possible to hire a water taxi at the marina. Lover's Beach is surrounded by towering rock formations and is hidden behind Cabo San Lucas' landmark arch, El Arco at Land's End. It is approximately 1,000 miles south of San Diego, California, approximately 22 miles southwest of the Los Cabos International Airport and 18 miles west of San Jose del Cabo.

Las Cabos is located on the southerly tip of Baja California Sur. The active, more rowdy resort community of Cabo San Lucas is located on the west tip of the peninsula and the more sedate, more typically Mexican town of Cabo San Jose is located approximately 18 miles to the east of Cabo San Lucas.

Between the two towns is 18 miles of resort communities located on the ocean edge. Whenever I go to Cabo San Lucas there are more resorts. It is an active thriving area.

For those who are interested in golfing, miles of golf celebrity designed golf courses are found. As well as the many waterfront hotels and resorts, there are luxury home developments.

A Brief History.

Herman Cortez set sail to the reported island which was full of gold and pearls and inhabited by Amazons in 1535 with three galleons and over 600 men and women. He soon discovered there was no gold and pearls nor were there Amazons. In disappointment he left and sailed south after naming the area Santa Cruz.

After many years of pirates, Englishman, Dutch, Spanish, Texans, and missionary attempts, the desert landscape and the unwelcoming indians defeated all. It was not until after World War II that a group of Southern Californians found that they could fly to La Paz and then travel by rutty roads to the shores of Mar de Cortes. It was a well-kept secret that gradually leaked out that the Sea of Cortes was teeming with fish and was well-protected. The weather was almost perfect. Since there were no roads, long yachts and private airplanes kept the beautiful ocean vistas exclusive. It was said to be the favorite of such well-known names as Bing Crosby, Phil Harris, Desi Arnaz and The Duke. In 1948 they built the hotel Las Cruces on the East Cape.

The beautiful weather and warm waters produced and to this day produces great fishing. In addition the ladies and non-fisherman were discovering the sun, fine sandy beaches and beautiful sunsets.

Cabo San Lucas Today

Cabo San Lucas of today has stolen the resort scene in Mexico. It is located on the same latitude as Hawaii. It was become the destination of many world travelers. A popular port-of-call, Cabo San Lucas hosts 400 cruise ships a year and receives over 1 million annual visitors. Where first class, five star resorts abound, Cabo San Lucas offers family activities and first class amenities. Cabo, as we affectionately call it, has world class golfing, upscale shopping, moderate temperatures nine months of the year and is known as the marlin capital of the world. In addition to the resorts, for the traveler who prefers to rent vacation villas or stay at bed and breakfasts or boutique hotels which rent for the week or month. there are many to choose from.

The active nightlife includes the Cabo Wabo, a must see, El Squid Roe and the newest Zoo Bar and Dance. In addition you will find the Puerto Paraiso Mall with escalators and elevators. Many restaurants surround the Mall with specialties from many nations. The main city is built in a horseshoe arrangement around the harbor for the numerous fishing and sightseeing boats that offer fishing, pirate ship, whale watching, sunset watching, scuba diving, trips to the Lover's Beach where you can spend an afternoon. There is parasailing, sailboating. In addition to the water pleasures, you can go four wheeling into the desert along the ocean where there are no houses and no hotels.

My Personal Experiences

I have visited Cabo San Lucas many times. I went marlin fishing with my daughter. She caught a great big marlin and I caught a smaller one. It was a smaller boat which the Captain, his assistant, my daughter and myself had to ourselves. When I left shore, they told me that the captain I was with would definitely find the marlin. We were back in the harbor by 9 a.m. The last time I went I watched as the boats went by coming back from fishing. They had flags showing how many fish they had caught that day. There were many flags that day.

One year my sister went with me and my daughter. We went four wheeling. I had never been on one before. We had a group of about 10 four wheelers. We managed to keep up and it was fun. We were out in the middle of nowhere without a house, resort or golf course in sight. Nothing but the ocean on one side and the sage brush covered desert on the other. A wonderful memory.

I have taken the pirate boat tour which was fun. There were entertainment all of the time. I went whale watching and we did see whales. I am from Alaska and they tell me they are the Alaska whales that are about to have their babies and then they will head back to Alaska. We went to watch the sun set over the ocean. I had no idea it would be so wonderful. One moment the big orange sun was there and the next minute it was gone.

We always go to dinner at the Galleon which has italian food, lots of waiters, and first class dining. We have been to fiestas with singing and dancing and a Mexican food buffet. I have been to Cabo Wabo and have shopped the street vendors as well as many shops. I do a lot of walking while I am there and take a taxi back to the hotel if I am tired.
